Toner, essence, serum, ampoule - Differences? 🤔

Admit it, Kbeauty is becoming more and more mainstream not just in the local, but also in the other parts of the world. With this, there might be some products you've never seen before or aren't familiar with it. The Korean 10-step skincare routine has become popular for its abundance of products and treatments like toners, essences, serums, and ampoules.

Now let us have a quick glance on how do these powerful liquids differ from each other and what kind of roles they play in the regimen.

Toner is the third step in the Kbeauty routine after following double cleansing - removing make up and washing the face. Toners help balance the pH of skin. Skin's ideal pH ranges from 4.5 - 6.2 and it can be thrown off by cleansing. Toners can help neutralize the alkaline state of your skin due to rinsing of water . It keeps your skin from becoming too dry or oily after you wash your face. It also serves to remove remaining makeup you may have missed with your cleanser.
In addition, these lightweight liquids can also often provide a boost of antioxidants, soothing agents, and vital hydration.

This is called the heart of the K-Beauty skincare regimen, as essences lend a major boost in moisture of the skin. Glowing Korean faces that we usually see on K-dramas are the result of proper hydration. Furthermore, having a healthy hydrated skin barrier prevents issues like irritation and allows your complexion to be radiant and bright. Aside from hydrating the skin, a lot of essences also contain antioxidants and minerals to help nourish skin.

After toner and essence as your prep steps, let us move on to the main treatment, serum. Serums tend to be more concentrated in its active ingredients . They often feature heavy-hitting ingredients that really target and treat skin issues like dark spots, wrinkles, and dullness. Serums are usually thought to have a more viscous texture than essences.

Thinking as a booster shot, ampoules are considered to be more concentrated version of a serum. They contain a higher number of active ingredients and are used for a finite amount of time. For example, there's a big event coming and you may want to use a weekly ampoule pack so that you can get big results for it. You may often see them in smaller vials or dropper bottles as a little goes a long way here.

General rule of thumb: apply essence, serums and ampoules in order from thinnest to thickest in texture. Just keep in mind that the texture can vary from brand to brand.
